Traditional Uses: Traditionally used by Aboriginal Australians for wound healing and fungal infections and as a tea to reduce fevers, and later adopted in Chinese, Ayurvedic, and European medicine for coughs, bronchitis, and respiratory congestion.
Potential Benefits: The essential oil acts as an expectorant to loosen phlegm and relieve congestion; exhibits antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties; and emerging research suggests neuroprotective potential for cognitive health.
Warnings: Eucalyptus oil is toxic if ingested (even small amounts of 4-24 mL can be fatal); do not use on children under 2 years or near their face/nose due to risk of airway spasm; avoid during pregnancy/breastfeeding; and use cautiously with diabetes medications, barbiturates, and in those with asthma, liver/kidney disease, or low blood pressure.
