Traditional Uses: Traditionally used since ancient Greek and Roman times as an emmenagogue to stimulate menstruation and induce abortion, as a digestive aid for flatulence and colic, and as an insect repellent (hence the name “pulegium” from Latin pulex meaning flea).
Potential Benefits: Laboratory studies suggest antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antispasmodic properties; however, no modern clinical trials support therapeutic use, and the plant is NOT recommended for any internal application due to severe toxicity.
Warnings: STRONGLY AVOID INTERNAL USE—essential oil is fatal even in small doses (as little as 10-15 mL can cause death), and even herbal tea has caused liver failure, seizures, coma, and death in infants and adults; do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding (potent abortifacient and fetotoxic), and avoid entirely in children and individuals with liver or kidney disease.
