Traditional Uses: Traditionally used by Native Americans to treat pain, as a stimulant, and for calming nerves, while the milky sap (lactucarium) was applied topically to treat warts and poison ivy, and the leaves were consumed as a nutritious green.
Potential Benefits: The whole plant contains lactucarium, which has been traditionally used for its anodyne (pain-relieving), antispasmodic, diuretic, hypnotic, narcotic, and sedative properties, used in treating insomnia, anxiety, neuroses, dry coughs, whooping cough, and rheumatic pain.
Warnings: Avoid during pregnancy and lactation; normal doses can cause drowsiness, while excessive doses may cause restlessness and death through cardiac paralysis, and it may interact with sedative medications.
