Traditional Uses: Historically used by North American herbalists and Native American tribes as an abortifacient to induce miscarriage, as a uterine stimulant to facilitate childbirth, and to treat hypertension, arteriosclerosis, muscle spasms, arthritis, and as a sedative.
Potential Benefits: Traditionally used as an oxytocic (labor-inducing agent) to increase uterine contractions and for controlling postpartum hemorrhage, but there is insufficient scientific evidence to determine its effectiveness for any health condition.
Warnings: American mistletoe is LIKELY UNSAFE when taken by mouth; can cause vomiting, diarrhea, bradycardia (slow pulse), hypotension, hallucinations, and seizures; the entire plant is considered poisonous—avoid entirely during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and do not use if you have heart disease.
